Authorities in Florida say a 3-year-old was killed and a woman was injured in a shooting while attending a child’s birthday party over the weekend.
Police in Miami-Dade said officers discovered the child suffering from an apparent gunshot wound while responding to an alert from ShotSpotter, a gunshot detection system, late Saturday.
The department said in a statement detailing the incident that officers took the toddler to a hospital upon discovering they had been wounded. The toddler died at the hospital shortly thereafter.
Officers discovered another victim had been shot as more began to arrive at the scene.
The woman had also been taken to the hospital and has since been said to be in stable condition.
“The preliminary investigation revealed that the victims were attending a child’s birthday party at the residence, which is a short-term rental. The subject fled in an unknown direction and remains at large,” police said.
The department said an investigation into the shooting remains ongoing.
